What is large-size MPCVD single-crystal diamond?

Large-size MPCVD single-crystal diamond refers to large-size, high-quality single-crystal diamonds produced using microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition (MPCVD).

Single-crystal diamond not only possesses the excellent physical and chemical properties of polycrystalline diamond but also exhibits outstanding optical transmittance, electron-hole mobility, bandgap width, breakdown voltage, and other characteristics, demonstrating significant application advantages in fields such as semiconductors, microelectronics, and optical devices.

In the industrial sector, the primary methods for producing single-crystal diamond are High-Pressure High-Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). Monocrystalline diamond produced via the HPHT method tends to be smaller in size and of relatively limited quality; in contrast, the CVD method enables the production of large-sized products. Among these, the MPCVD method has become the mainstream technological approach for producing high-purity, large-size monocrystalline diamond due to its features of no electrode contamination, high plasma density, and strong process controllability.

According to the *2025–2030 China Large-Size MPCVD Single-Crystal Diamond Industry Market In-Depth Research and Development Prospects Forecast Report* published by the New Horizon Industry Research Centre, although China is the world’s largest diamond producer, the number of enterprises using MPCVD technology to produce large-size single-crystal diamonds remains relatively small. Large-size MPCVD single-crystal diamond can serve as a high-thermal-conductivity, high-transmittance optical window material for high-precision detectors, offering broad application prospects. In 2024, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) released the 2024 project application guidelines for 16 key special projects under the National Key Research and Development Programme, including "High-Performance Manufacturing Technologies and Major Equipment". Within the category of special and cutting-edge functional materials, the project "Efficient Preparation and Demonstration Application of Large-Size MPCVD Single-Crystal Diamond Photothermal Functional Materials" has been included as a supported project.
